“坚持做某事”是“insist on doing”？怪不得托福写作分不高

　　新航道常州托福培训班老师批改同学们Issue作文的时候，发现大家非常爱用“insist”表示“坚持做某事”。

　　比如下面这些就是从大家作业里摘出来的句子，这些同学都想表达的是，“即使遇到了困难，也要坚持着去做某事”。(句子有删改)

　　Jay insisted learning piano as his major.

　　周杰伦“坚持”将学习钢琴作为主修专业。

　　He still insisted in solving these with the dynamic willing and spiritual support...

　　他“坚持”用精神支持解决问题……

　　People’s intrinsic interests could make them insist on their study...

　　人们的兴趣可以让他们“坚持”学习……

　　但以上句子中的insist这个词用的

　　都不对……

　　insist的用法

　　insist的意思是(人)坚决要求，坚持说。相当于demand。

　　例：

　　“It’s not that difficult,” she insists.

　　“并没有那么困难，”她坚持说。

　　My family insisted that I should not give in, but stay and fight...

　　我的家人坚持认为我不应让步，而应该留下来继续抗争。

　　而 insist on doing sth，则是“声称一定要做某事”。

　　例：

　　He insisted on checking everything himself.

　　他坚持要亲自检查一切。

　　She insisted on being present at all the interviews.

　　她坚持所有采访自己都要在场。

　　从以上句子中我们可以体会到，insist暗含着“我偏要这么干，我偏这样想，你们能拿我怎么样”的意思，和“不抛弃不放弃，持续做事”是不一样的。

　　“坚持做某事”到底怎么说

　　1. Persist in doing sth

　　韦氏词典对于persist的解释是 to go on resolutely or stubbornly in spite of opposition。

　　比如，周杰伦小时候家里很穷，但出于对音乐的热爱，他坚持学习钢琴和大提琴，我们就可以说 ：

　　Jay persisted in learning piano and cello because of his love for music.

　　2. Stick to

　　这个短语跟persist in词义相似，都是在困难情况下坚持做某事的意思。

　　比如，我们鼓励因为托福考试而沮丧的朋友，就可以说：

　　If you want to succeed, you’ve got to stick to it and not give up.

　　3. Press on

　　这个短语有两层意思：

　　( 1 )持续地前进。比如我们可以这样形容军队克服恶劣天气前行：

　　The troops pressed on in spite of the snow.

　　( 2 )坚持做某事。

　　We should press on despite of our frustration.
