“
People have different views on how to reduce traffic congestion. Some think that governments should build more train and subway lines, while others think that building more roads and widening existing roads will reduce traffic congestion. Discuss both views and give your opinion. ”

The best way for the government to solve the traffic congestion is to provide free public transport 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. To what extent do you agree or disagree? (2014/1/9,2017/1/21)

In many towns and cities, the high volume of road traffic has been a problem. What are the causes and what actions can be taken to solve the traffic problem?  (2012/7/21)

In some countries, the government has tried to reduce traffic. For instance, they imposed a congestion tax during rush hour. Do you think this development is positive or negative? (2016/1/30)

Increasing the price of cars and petrol is one of the best ways to solve growing traffic and pollution problems. To what extent do you agree or disagree?(2018/3/10)

Traffic and housing problems in major cities could be solved by moving large companies and factories and their employees to the countryside. To what extent do you agree with this opinion?(2018/5/5)

修建新铁路和地铁:好处当然是运载量大,污染相对较小,坏处是成本高昂,且耗时很长;

(2) equally 同样地
(3) urban 城市的
(4) to my mind
(5) depend upon 取决于

It is quite obvious that train and subway lines are able to carry more passengers than roads, especially in a given period of time, and therefore are  very effective in reducing the traffic in rush hours. The subway, for example, can deliver more than 10,000 people in as short as half an hour, who, if all travel by buses or cars, will pose tremendous pressure to the traffic. However, though causing less pollution, it is pretty costly and time-consuming to build a new train and subway line. The city dwellers will often have to endure a few years’ traffic inconveniences before they can enjoy the benefits that a new train and subway line brings to them.

(2) a given period of time 一段给定时间
(3) rush hours
(4) deliver 运送
(5) pose 构成
(6) tremendous
(7) time-consuming
(8) city dwellers

By contrast, building a new road or widening an existing road will take far less time and money. It is usually a matter of a few days or weeks before the city people can enjoy a new or a widened road. The problem, however, is that compared with the train or subway line, the roads can solve the traffic congestion but only to a very limited extent. Besides, too many roads will take up a lot of urban spaces, which are often already very crowded.

(2)by contrast 相反
 (3)  a matter of a few days or weeks
(4)to a very limited extent
(5)take up 占用

(2)address 解决
(3)determine 决定
(4)cosmopolitan
(5)preferable 更好的
(6)to and from work 上下班

“These days an increasing number of people in many cities know little about their neighbors and do not have a sense of community. What do you think are the causes and what solution can you suggest?.”

也许是受到了媒体的影响,认为邻居可能不是好人,可能会抢我,甚至害我(物质层面);

也许是家里的网络给了我太多归属感,让我沉醉在虚拟世界里(心理层面);

01

Now we have numerous newspaper reports about a child being robbed without anybody offering to help him or a ninety-year-old poor woman dead at home for days without anybody knowing it. All these reports point to one key problem city dwellers face nowadays, especially in big cities: they seldom interact with their neighbors, much less to say they care about their neighbors, and they feel lonely because they do not feel they belong to any community.

(3) numerous 许多(可用来替换many, a lot of)
(5) much less to say

02

When asked why they do not socialize with their neighbors, many people would respond by saying “Why should I? This is a dangerous city!” Indeed, modern media such as TV, newspaper and Internet have had way too much coverage about the city’s crimes like theft, robbery and murder. People constantly exposed to such reports of the dark side of the city life may harbor the idea that nobody is trustworthy, including their neighbors.

Firstly, many people do not socialize with their neighbors because they think the city is a dangerous place.
(3) way too much (表示否定)太多,过多,比如:She has spent way too much money on her dresses.
(4) people constantly exposed to such reports...may... If people often read such reports, they may...
(5) ...harbor the idea that...

When they want to talk, they can just pick up their cellphone and talk to anybody in the world; when they have some brilliant ideas they want to share, they can get online with a few simple clicks and then post their ideas there.

(2) necessity 必要性
(3) click 敲键盘就是click the keyboard

But we all know that confinement to oneself is no good, no matter how many friends or fans you may have online. As part of the solution to the problem, I would suggest everybody have an “Internet-free moment”. Simply put, we can set aside an hour every day, in which we try to reach out for our neighbors without a cellphone or laptop with us. Once we begin to care about real people around us, we will suddenly find ourselves living in a community that also cares about us. This experience is much morerewarding than having thousands of virtual friends who do not really know us. At the same time, all media should be fully aware of their share of responsibility in this problem, and try to bring more positive stories about the city life.

(2) confinement to oneself
(3) simply put 简言之
(4) set aside
(5) rewarding
(6) virtual

“Many businesses think that the new employees who graduate from schools lack basic interpersonal skills, such as working with colleagues as a team. What are the causes and solutions to this problem? ”

从个人看,现在很多大学生喜欢把自己禁锢在电子的虚拟空间内,包括使用个人社交平台,打电脑游戏等,没有积极投身外部世界;

Why do many employers think that new employees who graduate from schools possess poor, even terrible interpersonal skills? This problem refers to those employees who lack what is called ‘emotional intelligence’ and frequently experience failure andfrustration when attempting to interact with others in the workplace.

(2) intelligence 智力
(3) frustration

02

The new graduates themselves are partly to blame for this problem, for many of them spend their university time mostly on their smart phones and computer games, rather than social activities. Yet the most important reason is that interpersonal skills are ‘soft skills’ that are not likely to be taught in the classroom in the same way ‘hard skills’ (school subjects) are taught. In a school where the academic excellence is highly rated, there is often an under-commitment to the development of effective interpersonal skills. As a result, many job seekers are not good at the interpersonal skills which are valuable to businesses.

(2) somebody/something is to blame for...
(3) rate 评价
(4) as a result 结果
(5) valuable

While it is true that some individuals are born with an innate gift of ‘soft skills’, it is just as accurate to say that those not sogifted may learn these skills and develop them more fully. The first step is, of course, getting out of their virtual world and learning to interact with real people. For instance, they should learn such abilities, among others, to put on a happy face in day-to-day life, express appreciation for team members, and become good listeners. Then, it is also very important that the schoolcurriculum include more courses telling students how to build up strong social networking and maintain favorable interpersonal relationship. Equally important, the school should create more opportunities for students to practise the interpersonal skills they have learned from these courses.

(2) innate 天生的
(3) gifted
(4) appreciation
(5) curriculum

Some people who have been in prison become good citizens later, and it is often argued that these are the best people to talk to teenagers about the dangers of committing a crime. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Young people who commit serious crimes, such as a robbery or a violent attack should be punished in the same way as adults. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Some people who have been in prison become good citizens later. Some people think that they are the best people to talk to school students the danger of committing a crime. Do you agree or disagree?

People are afraid to leave their homes for fear of crimes. Some people believe that more action should be taken to prevent crimes while others think that little could be done. Discuss both sides and give your opinion.

Children are committing more crimes. What are the causes? How to punish them?

Some think most crime is the result of circumstances e.g. poverty and other social problems. Other believe that most crime is caused by people who are bad by nature. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

In most countries, prison is an effective solution to the problem of crime. Some people think it is a more effective solution to provide education for those who violate the law. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

A recent newspaper article report that a 14 years old boy who seriously destroyed his school got a punishment to clean streets instead of being sent to the prison, Do you think this is right, or the young criminals should be sent to the jail?

01

One important part of teenagers’ education is turning them into law-abiding citizens by making them realise the dangers of committing crimes. The best way to do this, as many people would argue, is to have ex-prisoners, who have now become good citizens, talking to teenagers about their personal stories. While I think it may indeed be effective, it may also fail sometimes.

(2) law-abiding
(3) personal stories

02

Obviously, ex-prisoners are in a better position than anybody elseto let teenagers understand the consequences of violating the law. They were personally involved in crimes and know very well how much pain their behavior has inflicted upon the victims and their families. They also know very well how hard their life in prison was and what freedom really means. Compared with the lectures given by the law teachers, the personal stories shared by ex-prisoners are more direct, more powerful emotionally, and thus more effective as an educational tool.

Nevertheless, having a former prisoner standing face to face with a group of teenagers may be an awkward scenario in some cases. It is common for people, especially youngsters, to have a fear towards criminals, particularly those who have committed violent crimes. Very naturally, teenagers may develop a strong distrust of the former criminals and so they will not listen to their stories, however interesting these stories might be. That is why many schools would have policemen, instead of former prisoners, giving law lessons to their students, because to teenagers, policemen are much more trustworthy.

(2) scenario 场景
(3) distrust 不信任
(4) trustworthy

One important part of teenagers’ education is turning them into law-abiding citizens by making them realise the dangers of committing crimes. The best way to do this, as many people would argue, is to have ex-prisoners, who have now become good citizens, talking to teenagers about their personal stories. While I think it may indeed be effective, it may also fail sometimes.
Obviously, ex-prisoners are in a better position than anybody else to let teenagers understand the consequences of violating the law.
