Part1

Topic : Study

Do you work or study?

或者“I'm studying.”

1. answer the question (给出回答)

I am a student in Nanjing University and now I’m in the sophomore year.

*大一:first year/ i am a freshman; 大二:second year/ sophomore; 大三:Junior year; 大四:senior year

I'm a student now and major in business, which is not easy but really interesting.

What’s your major?/what subjects are you studying?

E.g.1:My major is/ I am major in business. It’s really interesting because we can learn lot’s of knowledge in various fields, including marketing, finance and economics.

E.g. 2: My major is Human resources which is interesting and indeed, however (however 也可放在句中要转折的信息前以表强调), a tough task that has endless deadlines at the end of each semester.

I am studying law because it’s a really promising major and I’m hoping to pursue it as a career in the future.

Topic: Haircut

fringe/bang 刘海儿,

Bowl cut

Spiky hair刺头

Mohawk [ˈməʊhɔːk]

而是:“I got my hair cut yesterday. / I got a haircut yesterday.”

Have you ever had an unhappy haircut experience?

Yes:

如:definitely;absolutely;certainly。

   短语:without a doubt; of course

I’m pretty sure.

I believe so.

I supposed I have.

I would say / have to say yes

No:

I doubt it.

Not really.

I have to say yes. Once upon a time, I told the hairdresser exactly what I wanted my haircut to be, you know, the common crew cut. But the result is that I had to keep a Mohawk hairstyle for almost 2 weeks.

Well,i don't think i had such experience. Because I know a barber who is really qualified and reliable, which means I have always been satisfied with his haircut skill.

Topic: Jeans

Why jeans are so popular?

Material:jeans are made from Denim, essentially, which is just cotton.

Color:indigo.

Price:affordable for most people, even students.

Style: easy-matching 百搭; creative and unique design in some fashionable brands.

Too skinny to do sports:

Hindering blood circulation

Too casual to attend some formal occasions

这些语料不仅仅可以回答这道题目,类似于“Do you like jeans?” “Is it popular to wear jeans in your country?”,“Do you often wear jeans?”

E.g.1 : Definitely I like wearing jeans. You know, jeans are made from denim, essentially, which is just cotton. It is really comfortable and durable enough for wearing and tearing every day.

E.g.2: To be honest, I have to say I’m not really into jeans. Because some of jeans are too skinny to do sport exercise. Since I am a basketball lover (篮球爱好者),jeans might not a proper choice for me.

Topic : Hometown

Where is your hometown?/Where are you from?

Vibrant; modern, prosperous, cosmopolitan, hustling and bustling, full of hustle and bustle, advanced public amenities (such as shopping malls, cinemas, bars, hospitals,schools...), various transportation, many high-rise skyscrapers ....

缺点:congested traffic condition, over populated, fast pace and heavy burden of life....

优点:peaceful and quiet, carefree and joyous lifestyle, idyllic scenery, closed to nature...

缺点: inconvenient transportation, far away from city centre and public amenities, cramped streets, lack of job opportunities....

E.g.1  My hometown is XXX, which is a prosperous big city with plenty of high-rise skyscrapers. But sometimes I also felt it’s indeed over-populated.

E.g. I come from a small village named XXX. I really enjoy the idyllic view there which provides us a carefree and joyous lifestyle.

Will you still live there in the future?

In what ways has your town or city changed since you were a child?

E.g. 1 Well, to be honest, I am not willing to stay at this small town after graduating. It too isolated that the traffic is too inconvenient, which means if I need to see a doctor, it would take me almost 1 hour drive to the city hospitals.

E.g. 2 I have noticed that the number of the population in my city has increased dramatically. That has been reflected in the frequent traffic jams especially during peak time.

Part 2

People 人物类

Describe a person who is good at his or her job

You should say:

Who this person is

What his or her job is

How he or she likes the job

And explain why this person is good at the job

My mother is a lawyer which is a so stressful and time-consuming job. Her customers are always some managers from different kinds of companies. They turn to her to consult all kinds of legal questions. Sometimes she helps them interpret laws and regulations, gathering evidence to formulate defense and initiate legal actions

She is a really diligent eager beaver(工作积极主动的人), which means she often gets home late, totally exhausted. Sometimes, she even forgets to have dinner and burn the midnight oil for work (熬夜加班) until 11 o’clock at night. My father always asks her to change her job or just be a housewife, but she never agrees with the suggestion(平时的工作状态表明了diligent). She loves performing legal research, drafting legal documents and following up after a court decision. Therefore, I know she would never give up her job, however difficult and tiring it may be.

Being a lawyer is never easy. When I wake up and go to the bathroom at midnight, the light in the study is always on. She always treat her work carefully and seriously so that she has to read many documents and a lot of previous cases just to make sure she isn't refuted in court. I still remember last month she was very anxious because the client refused to provide all the detailed information for the sake of privacy. Then my mother spent half a month persuading him into trusting her (具体的一个事例来说明工作态度的carefully and seriously).

This year, she was awarded as one of the best lawyers in her firm. I think she deserves that considering she has always been so devoted to her job She also sets a very good example for me and I have learned the precious spirit of work ethic from her (对我的影响).

A sense of fulfillment and achievement 成就感

Excessive workload

A stressful and time-consuming job

Work under enormous stress

Backbreaking/ laborious task

A demanding job

Work ethic

Be well-staffed

Be an eager beaver

Work around the clock

Be tired up at work 忙于工作无暇估计其他事

Media

“A movie you would like to share with your friends” 多次出现在考生回忆中。

Describe a film you would like to share with your friends

You should say:

Where you watched it

What it was about

Who you watched it with

How you felt about it

And why you want to share it with friends

Sample:

“You have a dream, you got to protect it. People can’t do something themselves, they wanna tell you, you can’t do it. You want something, go get it.

I believe you’ve heard this sentence. Yes, it’s a famous line from the American film The Pursuit of Happiness which is directed by a renowned director Gabriele Muccino. And the leading role stars (由。。担任主演) my favorite actor,Will Smith(电影基本信息) . It about a struggling(拼命) father who encouraged his little kid to be brave and not to give up when faced with predicaments (电影内容梗概).

When I was at high school, my teacher played the film for us in class one day. I was under excessive pressure(压力大) at the time as I wasn’t performing well in my exams. My parents were worried about my study and my mental health. This movie was important because it became the symbol for most of my classmates including me. I gathered up courage and tried much harder. I kept telling myself that I ought to protect my dreams. This movie touched the bottom of my heart,(直击心灵) and I felt deeply moved and motivated (在生活中的鼓舞).

In addition, it was also fantastic in improving my oral English. I used to read the lines over and over again, and surprisingly I found my pronunciation improved after time (在学习上的帮助). So now I’m willing to recommend it to my friends, and hope it will be useful for them too.

Object

Describe a piece of clothing you enjoy wearing

You should say

What it looks like

When do you wear it

Where did you buy it

And explain why you like it

其中,关于颜色的描述,我们除了可以使用常见的赤橙黄绿青蓝紫之外,可以关注一下Pantone公司每年推出的流行色,例如:serenity(静谧蓝),ginger yellow(姜黄色)chili pepper(辣椒红),peach pink(蜜桃粉),Galaxy blue(银河蓝),greenery(草木绿),living coral(活力珊瑚,2019年度色)... This skirt is serenity which is a kind of blue was produced by Pantone Incorporated.

如果是be made of cotton, 可以说穿起来soft and warm,如果是silver,可以说smooth and cool。设计如果很又个性我们可以说the design is trendy and stylish,如果很日常我们也可以用easy-matching(百搭)来形容。

Sample:

My favorite piece of clothing is a casual jeans jacket. It is a short button downed jacket(扣扣子的夹克) that comes in light denim (丹宁布,牛仔专用面料) blue. The jacket is designed in the trendy style, with two invisible pockets on the sides.

It fits me through the shoulders and hits at the hip(长度刚好及臀) when I wear it. I bought the jeans jacket a year ago online from Forever21,which is a famous brand and popular among young generation I was shopping for workout clothes when I encountered the jacket on sale. It turned out to be my favorite piece of clothing that I own. I always wear this jacket in spring and early autumn, when the weather is not terribly chilly. I can wear it in the daytime when I go to classes and also during nighttime when I hang out with friends.

The primary reason I love the jacket is that it fits me perfectly, it seems like specially tailored for me(量身定制) and all my friends say I look sharp(样子时髦帅气) dressing in it. Also, the jacket is not too heavy or lightweight, even on a warm summer day, I can tie it around my waist when the temperature is higher and put it on at night when it gets chilly. Last but not least, the jacket is of good quality, unlike other hard denim fabrics, the material feels soft and comfortable. I’ve been wearing this jacket for almost a year and it still looks just as new as when I bought it.

Some people think in modern age it is unnecessary to teach children the skill of handwriting. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Task 1

Many young people today know more about international pop or movie stars than about famous people in the history of their own country.

Why is this?

What can be done to increase young people’s interest in the famous people in the history of their country?

理由Reasons:

Due to the test-based education system in most countries, students are only taught to get good grades and as a result, they only focus on passing their exams rather than gaining knowledge about any topic. Their interest is never developed in history and heroes of our past.

the youth today is more fascinated towards the celebrities because of the excessive exposure that the media give to them.

parents are busy with their work so their children’s education about their roots and history has taken a back seat.

Educational trips to museums and famous historical places help develop the children’s interest.

The government should encourage children to visit museums by subsidizing tickets for the students.

TV shows and movies can be made around famous historical personalities and their contributions.

The spending on the development of technology of space exploration is not justifiable. They believe there are many beneficial ways to spend these money. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Admittedly, it seems that space exploration does not offer direct benefits to ordinary people and costs an enormous amount of money.

However, space exploration benefits us in various indirect ways. More specifically, space exploration gives impetus to a series of research projects, which has brought huge convenience to many aspects of our lives. The advanced technology of telecommunication and GPS are two representative examples of its contribution. In addition, compared to other areas of government spending, the cost of space exploration simply is not ridiculously high. For instance, in a year, the US government only spent 25 million dollars to produce space vehicles, while the US spending in Iraq was much higher than this figure.

On the other hand, there are many other urgent projects that require investment. If governments spent less money on space research, then they would be able to help people solve some of these problems such as population control, elimination of diseases like cholera, global warming and food shortages. It seems to me that all of these issues are more important because they affect the lives of millions of ordinary people.

结论:I think that the prerequisite of exploring the space is that the life quality of human beings will not be affected. Therefore, governments should prioritize more urgent problems of human beings rather than space exploration.

3. 分班Some people believe that schools should choose their students according to their abilities. While other people think students with different abilities should learn together. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

一方:Mixed ability classes provide a better environment for children’s all-round development.

Children with different abilities study together and in turn they can learn from one another.

For example, a student, who is good at academic study but weak in dancing or painting, can learn how to dance or paint from his peers. In this sense, mixed-ability classes allow students to develop their abilities in different subjects instead of only academic abilities.

另一方:Streaming 按能力分组 brings some benefits to teachers and students.

As for teachers, separating children with better academic abilities from others facilitates effective teaching.

in a class, if students have a similar level of academic ability, in turn teachers will be able to use the same methodologies for them.

Streaming enables students to learn in an effective way.

Both sides are justified and consequently it is hard to come to a consensus. To my mind, deciding whether to conduct streaming in a school depends on the specific situation of it.

In many countries, more and more men are staying at home to look after their children when women work full-time.

What are the reasons?

Is it a positive or negative development?

Reasons

1. Increasing number of opportunities for women, lesser gender bias and willingness of men to stay at home have all contributed to this.

2. More women are career-oriented and are financially capable of taking care of the family without any contribution from the husband or partner.

In my opinion, this trend has more positive outcomes and should be treated as a progress. If both genders do not cooperate and do not get the equal opportunity, the real progress would be impossible. This ensures that we live in an era when both men and women have an equal opportunity and someone is not deprived of a great career or a big opportunity only because of gender. Meanwhile, it is a great chance that allows the parents to decide who to earn money for the family and who to take care of the family without the need of considering the social and traditional belief.

A rise in the standard of living in a country often seems to only benefit cities rather than rural areas.

What problems might this difference cause?

How might these problems be reduced?

Problems:

Hundreds of millions of rural people in Chinese keep moving to cities, pushing up rents and food price in urban areas.

In rural areas of China, many children are left behind by their parents, who migrate to big cities. As a result, these children, who lack sufficient love from their parents, are more likely to have some psychological problems, which may be detrimental to their growth.

Students in big cities can enjoy the high-quality educational resources, which rural children can hardly obtain. Hence, their gap will enlarge inevitably.

Solutions:

More voluntary teachers should be encouraged to assist the rural education.

The government is obliged to balance the development of cities and rural areas by investing more money in the public services such as schools and hospitals and providing more job opportunities in rural areas.

Agricultural tourism can be developed to bring more income for the rural population.

Too much money is spent on looking after and repairing old buildings. Some people think money should be spent on building new modern buildings. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

It is undeniable that nowadays, maintaining old buildings needs a large amount of money, and those old buildings which are neither beautiful nor useful, should be demolished. However, preserving certain old buildings is important for several reasons. Firstly, these structures provide an insight into the history of our countries, showing us how people many centuries ago lived their lives . Secondly, ancient buildings are often attractive to tourists so they can generate a lot of revenue for the places where they visit.

支持

Those who advocate that people should build more modern buildings, think that this can bring benefits to our lives. To begin with, compared with old buildings, newer buildings have more scientific structure and layout so they can accommodate more people and have various functions. In addition, modern buildings enable more advanced equipment to be installed, improving people’s quality of life. Moreover, some of modern buildings are made of environmentally-friendly material and even can take advantage of solar energy and rainfall, which is beneficial to environment protection.

I think that governments should still spare no efforts to preserve the precious old buildings with historical, cultural and aesthetic value. As for some useless old buildings, people should use modern ones to replace them.

7.  水资源Some people think they have the right to use as much fresh water as they want, while others believe governments should strictly control the use of fresh water as it is a limited resource. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Admittedly, as an inhabitant of the earth, everyone of us has the right to use water, a kind of public resources. However, if all people think that they can use water extravagantly挥霍无度地, water resource on the earth will inevitably run out. In addition, we need to realize a crucial fact that in many regions of this globe, there are still some people who are experiencing a shortage of water and are suffering from infections due to using unsanitary water. Hence, we should not consume water recklessly.

Governments have the obligation to supervise people’s water use and to punish the behaviors causing water pollution. However, it is unrealistic to limit how much water every person should use. This is because water is one of the necessities of our lives, and every family has different needs and habits of using water. Once governments exert strict limits on the water consumption of every family, this practice will bring a huge inconvenience to ordinary people. For example, a family with more children inevitably needs more water to wash their clothes. Therefore, protecting water resource should not be at the expense of affecting the living quality of people.

结论:In conclusion, i think that both views are somewhat extreme. People should not use as much water as they want and should always have an awareness of saving water resource. Meanwhile, governments should supervise people’s water use rather than control them.
