Concessive clause

　　Concessive clause是让步状语从句，属于状语从句中的一种，出现在主从复合句中，给主句让步。

　　一般翻译为“尽管……”“即使……”或“退一步讲”等。

　　比较有代表性的引导词有although, though, even if, even though, no matter what, whatever, whenever, in spite of …

　　举一个简单的栗子来给大家看看让步状语从句能给你的回答带来怎样的改变：

　　Examiner: What do you want to do in the future?

　　Candidate 1: I want to be a teacher.

　　Candidate 2: Although my parents always desire me to be a doctor, I want to be a teacher.

　　01  although/ though引导的让步状语从句

　　Do you prefer to read newspaper or magazine?Well, to be honest, I’d say the former one is more appealing to me.Although magazines can be more colorful and entertaining, I’m more concerned about current affairs.(尽管杂志可能更多彩更有娱乐性，我还是更关心新闻时事。)

　　※注意：

　　1. although, though不可以与but连用，不过可以和yet, still, nevertheless连用。2. Although多用于句首，though多用于句中。

　　02  even if和even though引导的让步状语从句

　　Can we tell someone’s personality from his or her handwriting?Well, I guess sometimes, but it is not always the rule. Even if one’s penmanship is elegant, he or she can still be be sloppy in life.(即使一个人的字迹工整优雅，他/她在生活中也可能很邋遢。)

　　03  whenever, whatever...引导的让步状语从句

　　no matter what=whateverno matter who=whoeverno matter when=wheneverno matter where=whereverno matter which=whicheverno matter how=however

　　“no matter+疑问词”或 “疑问词-ever”，理解为“无论…”，在让步状语从句中，等号两边的词可以互换。

　　What kind of things would you never do in a hurry?Well, driving must be on the top of the list. You know, when driving at a fast speed, I put myself in potential danger, possibly end up causing accidents. So however/no matter how pressing the time is, I will never drive in a rush.(所以无论时间有多紧迫，我都不会匆匆忙忙地开车)

　　※注意：

　　在让步状语从句中用这类引导词，从句一般会使用现在时或有时也会使用情态动词may/might，主句常用将来时(主将从现)。

　　04  whether引导的让步状语从句

　　whether…or...(不管...还是...)连接的是两个相反的方面，这两方面的可能性都不会影响到主句。

　　Do you often stay up late?Yeah, to be honest, whether I’m busy or free, I wouldn’t hit the hay until it’s wee hours. Although I know it’s not a healthy lifestyle, I just couldn’t help myself doing that.
