Some people argue that the fittest and strongest individuals and teams can achieve the greatest
success in sports. But other people think the success is much related to the mental attitude. Discuss
both views and give your opinion.
To achieve the greatest success in sports, first it requires physical ability. However,
strength and fitness being equal, it is ultimately the right mental attitude that makes a big
difference. Speaking of individual or team competition in sports, stories about champions are
invariably related to an extraordinary interplay of the physical strength and the mental attitude.
(2)To achieve success
(3)Ultimately 最终地
(4)Make a big (huge) difference
(5)Invariably 总是
(6)Interplay
The fittest and strongest individuals and teams have the most competitive edge to win.
Certainly, the physical factors are key to victory in any sport event. For example, in the sports
that demand extreme physical ability, such as weight-lifting and marathon, usually the fittest and
strongest individuals are most likely to triumph. The same is also true to team sports like football and
basketball. The winning team is always made up of players who have better physical conditions. So
improving physical strength is undoubtedly the first thing that individuals and teams must do if they
want to succeed in sports.
(2)Competitive edge
(3)Triumph 获胜
(4)To be made up of 由 ...... 组成
That said, the other half of the success story in sports is closely associated with the right
mental attitude. Most successful athletes feel that their greatest asset is their mental ability along
with their physical ability, rather than their physical ability alone. People with the right mental attitude
understand that they will never give up even when they have lost a game, and that they will make a
comeback as long as they do not quit. So If individuals and teams believe in the right mental attitude,
then nothing can stop them from achieving the success.
(3)Asset 财富
(4)Alone
(5)Make a comeback
To sum up, in individual or team competitions, the body achieves what the mind believes. The
two things are not mutually exclusive as both are needed to make the greatest success happen.
(2)Mutually exclusive
(3)Make...happen
1. However, strength and fitness being equal, it is ultimately the right mental attitude that makes
a big difference.

the greatest success happen.
When new towns are planned, it is important to build more public parks or sports facilities than
shopping centres for people to spend their free time. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
When a new town is planned, there is always a problem to solve: whether should they build
more public parks or sports facilities or more shopping centers? Although more shopping malls
may provide conveniences for shoppers, I believe building more public facilities is a far better
choice.
(2)provide something for somebody / provide somebody with something,请注意 provide 的这
More public facilities help people to live a more satisfying life. With a public park nearby,
even the laziest person will go outdoors and breathe the fresh air there. People can take a walk
in the park together with their family members, chatting and having a lot of fun. This is of
course much beneficial to their health than staying at home, sitting in front of TV or a computer
like a couch potato. At the same time, when people are enjoying their time in the park or the
sports field, the town or city will become a lot more socially engaged and harmonious.
(2)Satisfying
(3)chatting and having a lot of fun
(4)Socially engaged
(5)Harmonious
However, if there are more shopping centres than parks in the town or city, it will become
crowded, noisy and dirty. When a street is lined with all kinds of stores, there will be numerous
vehicles coming and going, and when shoppers rush into these stores, they will make noise
intolerable to the city dwellers. As so many people crowd into a limited space like a shopping
centre, the safety problem may also arise. Some people may argue that, despite all these
problems, more shopping centres will benefit people by saving their shopping time. This
argument does not hold much water, however. On the one hand, having to push your way
through throngs of people when shopping does not really save your time; on the other hand,
as more and more families have cars, it does not really cost more time if they drive to the
shopping centres built in the wider space outside of the town or city.
(2)Be lined with 排列着 ……
(3)Numerous
(4)Intolerable
(5)City dweller
(6)Arise 出现
(7)…does not hold much water ……
(8)Throngs of people 人群
To conclude, I prefer to have more public facilities to shopping centres in a new town. A
town with more public facilities is more social, more harmonious and safer, while a town with
more shopping centres is noisier, more crowded and therefore less desirable. My suggestion
is that shopping centres be built in the suburb of the town/city where more space is generally
available.
(2)Prefer
(3)Desirable 可取的
(4)Available
1.Although more shopping malls may provide conveniences for shoppers, I believe building
more public facilities is a far better choice.
2.At the same time, when people are enjoying their time in the park or the sports field, the town
or city will become a lot more socially engaged and harmonious.
3.When a street is lined with all kinds of stores, there will be numerous vehicles coming

4.A town with more public facilities is more social, more harmonious and safer, while a town
with more shopping centres is noisier, more crowded and therefore less desirable.
Nowadays in some countries, people waste a lot of food that was bought from shops and
restaurants. Why do people waste food? What can be done to reduce the amount of food they throw
away?
1. 人们有钱了,扔掉一些食物经济上没有问题;
2. 从健康着想,很多人会毫不犹疑地扔掉那些可能过期的食物;
Nowadays people throw away tons of uneaten or unwanted food bought from stores and
restaurants. It is easy to understand the causes of this food waste; however, it is difficult to
change consumer behavior in the developed world.
(2)Throw away
(3)Tons of…
(4)The cause of… ……
词则是 for。
(5)Consumer behavior
Several factors contribute to food waste from the food-service industry outlets. Firstly,
consumers seem to be willingly responsible for wasting a lot of food because they can afford
to buy more than they can consume and throw away whatever food they do not need. Secondly,
speaking of health risks, many well-to-do people would rather be safe than sorry, so they
choose to discard food, thinking that older food and food that is past its expiry date would
make them sick. Finally, even if the majority of consumers know that food waste is a problem,
they are too stubborn to change the habit. As a result, nearly all excess food on the plate
would go to the waste.
(2)Contribute to…
(3)Outlet
(4)Be responsible for… 负责
(5)Afford to do…
(6)Well-to-do people 富有的人
(7)Discard
(8)Expiry date 失效期
(9)Stubborn
Any possible answer to the food-waste problem will involve changes in consumer behavior.
People can implement small changes that make a big difference in the amount of food
they throw away. Toward that end, the initial step is to ensure that food is eaten by humans.
Failing that, the next step is to feed it to farm animals. But donating waste food to the people
in hunger is not allowed by the government due to food-risk considerations. That risk, however
insignificant, means that when choosing between giving away and throwing away, the least
risky choice is the latter.
(2)Involve
(3)Implement 实施
(4)Make a big difference
(5)Initial 首要的
(6)Insignificant
Despite the fact that wasting food is wrong, often it is easier for people to do the wrong
thing. Ironically, while the realities of food waste today are becoming more evident than ever,
wasting food is widely accepted. The old habits of throwing away food die hard.
(2)Despite the fact that…
(3)Ironically
(4)Evident 明显的
(5)Die hard

Some people believe that newspaper is the best way to learn about news, while others believe
that more effective way is through other media. Discuss both views and give your opinion.
Some people think news has no
connection to people's lives, so it is a waste of time to read the news on the newspaper and watch
television news programs. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
The newspaper will remain to be an important source of people’s news consumption, even
though other media may get the upper hand. Many predict that the print’s days are numbered
due to strong competition from television, radio and the Internet. In terms of popularity,
newspaper is statistically down but is not emotionally out.
(1)本段引入话题,并提出观点:newspaper is statistically down but emotionally not out。
(2)Consumption 消费
(3)Get the upper hand 占上风
(4)Days are numbered
(5)Popularity
(6)Statistically
Statistically, it can be said that the print news audiences are dwindling, which means newspaper
readership is getting eclipsed by other ways of learning about news. It is a long, slow and painful
downward spiral to the point that the newspaper, like vinyl records and film cameras, is a relic for
collectors. According to research reports on the news industry, local television is the number one
source of news for the majority of people, with digital news coming in second, followed by the radio,
and then by the newspaper. One possible explanation why the newspaper is being left far behind is
that many people do not see the point in buying a print newspaper if they believe they can get all the
news they need elsewhere for free.
(2)Dwindle
(4)Spiral
(5)Relic
(6)News industry
(7)Leave behind...... 后面
(8)For free 免费地
Nevertheless, for emotional reasons, print newspapers will continue to exist for a good while.
To begin with, the feeling of a warm newspaper right off the press is one of traditional readers’ favorite
moments to begin a regular day. Unlike other ways of delivering news, a print newspaper can be
physically held in a reader’s hands, and this is a huge pro for print editions. In addition, newspapers
can provide opportunities for longer, more in-depth feature articles that tend to be read in full.
Instead of becoming a thing of the past, print newspapers are still widely read and preferred by many
audiences.
(2)For a while 相当长时间
(3)Pro
(4)In full 完整地
In conclusion, the golden days of print news are gone forever, but nothing is like the feeling of
physically holding a newspaper in hands. After all, the different ways of learning about news are not
mutually exclusive. Each news media outlet is effective in its own way.
(2)After all 毕竟
(3)Mutually exclusive
(4)Outlet
1. The newspaper will remain to be an important source of people’s news consumption, even
though other media may get the upper hand.
2. According to research reports on the news industry, local television is the number one source
of news for the majority of people, with digital news coming in second, followed by the radio, and then

Some people believe that women should play an equal role as men in a country's police force or
military force, while others think women are not suitable for these kinds of jobs. Discuss both views
and give your opinion.
可能有如下三种态度:(1)同意,女性可以当警察,可以参军;(2)不同意,女人不可以当警察参军;

Just 100 years ago, policewomen or women soldiers were basically unheard of, yet now
in many countries, women can be part of the police force and military force. Not afraid of the
accusation of being biased against women or even male chauvinistic, I strongly believe that
men and only men should be members of the police and military force.

(3)accusation 指责
(4)bias 偏见
(5)chauvinistic
In the first place, being a policeman or soldier is extremely demanding physically. With very
few exceptions, women are not possibly able to withstand the long hours of military training. For
example, a policeman or a soldier sometimes has to remain exposed to the strong sunlight or the
heavy storms hours after hours, or run many miles with heavy things carried with him. This means
a soldier must possess great strength, stamina and endurance. While I am not willing to say that all
women are lacking in these qualities, I am pretty sure that most women are not physically fit to do all
this.

(2)demanding
(3)exception 例外

Furthermore, if a woman plans to join the police or the army, she will have to deal with a
number of social issues. For instance, her parents may have strong objections to this choice of
hers, because with a daughter in the police or army, they may meet with inquiring and doubtful
eye from their neighbors and friends. It was for this reason that my cousin sister had to give up
her dream of becoming a soldier. Even if a woman does become part of the police or the army,
she will have to learn to face a world full of the opposite sex. She may feel completely at odds
with the rules and disciplines which are designed predominantly for men.

To conclude, physically, emotionally, and socially speaking, women are not suitable to serve in
the police or armed forces. However, this does not mean that women do not have their share of
responsibility to protect their country. As a supporter of "labor distribution" theory, I think women
can help the men serving in the police and the army by taking care of their parents, children, and the
family. This is as important as working in the police or the army themselves.

New technologies have changed the way children spend their free time. Do you think the
advantages outweigh the disadvantages?
本题中有三个关键词,即 new technologies, children, spend their free time,要求讨论 “ 新技术改

The widespread use of new technologies such as the Internet, computers, and smart
phones has fundamentally changed the way children spend their free time. In the past, most
children would engage in outdoor activities such as hiking, playing hide-and-seek, flying kites,
to name only a few. Those who enjoyed reading for pleasure would stay indoors and read
print books such as classical novels, children’s stories, and comic books. The situation is quite
different now. The great majority of children today spend their spare time online, playing video
games, listening to music, and browsing around in the social media of all kinds. In my view,
this new development has more downside risks.

Nowadays, children spend a lot of time watching TV and playing computer games. Some
people believe this has negative effects on children's mental abilities. To what extent do you agree or
disagree?

Parents tend to focus more on the risks of their children spending a great deal of time in front
of the screen. To begin with, watching TV is addictive and can result in brain damage, which may
impair children’s mental power to learn. It has been scientifically proved that prolonged TV viewing
can decrease children’s mental abilities to concentrate, and increase the chances of brain disorders.
Likewise, most parents see computer games as a negative influence or simply as an evil temptation
harmful to children’s mental abilities. Overdoing computer games, for example, might affect children’s
ability to understand the real world. Taken together, both watching TV and playing computer games
excessively are believed to be bad for children’s mental development.

Some people say that too much money and time are spent on protecting wild animals. Wild
animals have no place in the 21st century, so protecting them is a waste of resources. So, such
resources should be better spent on human population. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Protecting wildlife has never been so essential in the history of humanity when there
are fewer places left that wild animals can call home. Though it is not without any reason
that some people think protecting wild animals is a waste of resources, I certainly agree
that every penny spent on it is worthwhile.
(2)in the history of humanity
(3)...it is not without any reason that...
(4)...every penny spent on it is worthwhile
There are financial reasons why we need not to bother to save all endangered animal species.
It would cost billions of dollars a year to preserve threatened wild animals. This is unthinkable for
many, since millions of people are still suffering from food shortage and even more deprived of the
opportunity to receive education because of poverty. It is still harder to understand why anyone would
want to preserve such dangerous animals as tigers and wolves, which pose a threat both to people
and livestock. Surely, it will be sad if there are not any more cute pandas on the planet, but it is not
like that we depend on them. After all, what is the point of protecting threatened wild animals from
dying out when human beings have their own problems to worry about?
(2)endangered (/ threatened) animal species
(3)food shortage
(4)pose a threat to...
(5)what is the point of (doing sth./ sth.)...
However, protecting wild animals is important for the present as well as future generations.
The Mother Nature requires that different species stay connected so that the extinction of one
particular species might influence one or more other species along the line. If we as human
beings stand at the top of the pyramid of ecosystem, our survival is totally dependent on the
existence of other "lower" animals. Therefore, protecting wild animals can be a preventive step
for humans to remain safe. This has become particularly urgent in the 21st century because
much of the wild animal habitat has been destroyed by us human beings.
(2)future generations
(3)pyramid of ecosystem
(4)be dependent on...
In conclusion, far from having no connection to our survival, wild animals are the very
precondition for our existence on this planet. We certainly need to take care of our own problems, yet
if all wild animals perish, we human beings will perish as well.
(2)far from...
(3)...as well 也;同样
